Today I had the opportunity to spend a few hours walking around the streets of our nation’s capital. The brisk winter air cleared my head and gave me pause to do a bit of prayer walking. I began my journey at the Old Executive Building and then made my way slowly around the outside gates of the White House.
I was overwhelming at the way God prompted me to pray for our nation, our leaders, our military, and especially our President. Never before do I remember such a feeling of urgency to pray.
I witnessed a smattering of people who were apparently opposed to our military operations around the world. They were apparently opposed to America and all that we stand for, but there limited numbers reminded me that they really represent no one. There were others around the city honoring the legacy and memory of the late Martin Luther King, Jr. They were all, in their own way, expressing their hopes and dreams for the country I love.
The news from around the world continues to worsen. No one knows for sure what the future holds. As I sit here writing this email from my hotel room, I can look across the street and see the re-build Pentagon. I pray for the men and women inside that fortress and the decisions they make – decisions that will affect the entire world. I know there are war plans being crafted which will hopefully bring an end to the terror from certain parts of the world.
You and I have at our disposal all the weapons of warfare. We are called to walk (and pray) in the full-armor of God. Listen to what Paul said:
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” -- Eph 6:11-18 (from New International Version)
I want to urge you to join me in praying for our nation and our leaders. Pray with me on Tuesday, January 21st as I again pray around the White House, the Pentagon, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court Building.
